About Augusta County

With a population of approximately 73,900 (2013 census), Augusta County spans 971 square miles making it the second largest county in Virginia. It is situated at the crossroads of I-64 and I-81 and home to several manufacturers and distribution centers. It is also home to a very large farming community. In fact, Augusta County ranks second in the state for its agricultural production.

Settled in the early 1730’s, Augusta County’s first official government was organized in 1745. Once known as the “Breadbasket of the Confederacy”, it is located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley and offers many historical, natural, and, cultural sites as well as recreational activities for individuals and families.
